Project Timeline:

5 weeks (Jan 14 - Feb 13, 2019)

Project Brief

"Understand how design is an act of building a relationship between the product and the context of use. Produce a well-crafted working final model around the central concern of the user."

Target User Research

“Being in brighter spaces makes me feel more awake and productive.”

TARGET GROUP:

  • Young adults who want to make their living space more lively.

  • People who want to maintain plants but have a hard time keeping them alive due to lack of sunlight or forgetfulness.

OUT OF 26 INTERVIEWEES:

  • The top 3 most popular forms of light were desk lighting, decorative light, and projected light.

  • On a scale of 1 to 5, 46.2% of users state that they rate aesthetics as a 5 when buying lights.

Key Words

EFFICIENT

Users can mount VIVIXIA onto any wall to use it as a shelf, or they can simply place it on a counter-top. The addition of LED grow lights underneath allows users to place VIVIXIA in any room without having to worry about sunlight for the plants.

LIVELY

VIVIXIA’s illuminating presence can add a spark of excitement to any room. The celestial cut-out patterns project stars on surfaces that VIVIXIA is against, creating a subtle galaxy effect.

NATURAL

The components that make up VIVIXIA, from the celestial cutouts to the use of wood material, are all inspired by nature. VIVIXIA is an ivory color to imitate the shade of natural wood.

Model-Making Process

This project was the first time that I was able to experiment with a variety of fabricating techniques.

Firstly, it was the first time that I worked with LED light strips. I was able to wrap LED lights all around the inside of the shelf, and I used holographic plastic sheeting to cover up the galaxy patterns.

This was also the first time that I was able to utilize a laser cutter to precisely create patterns in my plywood. I also used a laser cutter for the sheet acrylic.

A consideration that I faced was whether or not to leave the natural wood pattern for the shelf. I decided to spray paint the wooden shelf an ivory white color for a more polished finish.

Multi-functional Usage

Users can place small items on top of the VIVIXIA shelf such as books, keys, and phones. The light underneath the frosted acrylic will illuminate items placed on top of it.

Small plants under 6 inches tall can also be placed on the plant shelf underneath. Red, green, and blue grow lights promote plant growth when placed close to plants.1 By lifting up the frosted acrylic glass on the top, users can also turn on the grow light and shelf light one at a time by plugging and unplugging the respected cables.
