Overview

As an instructional design intern at Nicor Gas(subsidiary of Southern Company), I was able to hone in on my user research skills to improve the interactive experience of field workers and potential customers with the company. I also became more knowledgeable about the natural gas industry and general safety by networking with representatives from different departments and participating in hands-on field courses.

Projects

I worked on a variety of projects throughout the summer that will continue to be utilized for many years. My work includes:​

  • Re-branding course materials

  • Presenting a social media campaign with other interns to the company's executive board in Atlanta, Georgia

  • Incorporating critical risk awareness for over 160 courses

  • Creating computer-based tests in Storyboard 360 for PlayerLync mobile learning devices

  • Presenting about user experience/user interface (UIUX) trends to the Instructional Design team

  • Assisting on set for a technical training video production 

  • Creating a course catalog with other Technical Training and Customer Experience interns 

Takeaways

I learned and improved so many skills over the summer thanks to the patient and encouraging team at Nicor Gas and Southern Company Gas. Overall, I'm so grateful to have had this experience, and the skills that I've nurtured there will continue to follow me throughout my design experience.

  • Working remotely with interns in different timezones 

  • Becoming more aware of how to be an effective public speaker 

  • Learning more about the technological integration experience with user groups that I am unfamiliar with

  • Creating interface mockups and promotional content for social media 

  • Learning about social media administration 

  • Designing digital content that is welcoming and forgiving for users who are not used to technology

  • Parking backwards (because safety first! :))
